Some people are always trying to find new ways to con\u00a0each other out of money, from unscrupulous used car salesmen ‘clocking’ the mileage on their motors to internet hackers sending out phishing emails<\/a> to unsuspecting consumers.<\/p>\n

And then there are good old-fashioned phone scams, so here are the top five to look out for and avoid…<\/p>\n

What is a phone scam?<\/h2>\n

A phone scam is when a cold call is made to defraud you\u00a0out of money or sensitive information, such as your bank details,\u00a0usually\u00a0by claiming to be from a bank or other service provider.<\/p>\n

Microsoft scams<\/h2>\n

Effective phone scams need to have as \u00a0much mass-appeal as possible to make sure most cold calls\u00a0hit the target. And so there are a couple of scams involving Microsoft <\/a>– after all, how many people do you know that don’t<\/em> use Windows?<\/p>\n
