{"id":3414,"date":"2017-01-25T07:42:32","date_gmt":"2017-01-25T07:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3414"},"modified":"2017-01-24T22:43:23","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T22:43:23","slug":"high-profile-hacks-delay-yahoo-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/high-profile-hacks-delay-yahoo-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"High profile hacks delay Yahoo sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proposed $4.8 billion sale of American search and tech giant Yahoo to telecoms firm Verizon has been put on hold following a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/yahoo-mail-account-hacked\/\" target=\"_blank\">high-profile data security breaches<\/a> that\u00a0saw more than 1 billion email accounts compromised.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is the Yahoo sale about?<\/h2>\n<p>Founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo in January 1994, \u00a0Yahoo is a California-based multinational tech company that was one of the early pioneers of internet search, and the last of the independently operated pioneers of the worldwide web.<\/p>\n<p>And while contemporaries like Netscape never saw it to the end of the first dotcom boom, Yahoo&#8217;s initial directory of websites branched out in search, email, shopping and news, offering the services free to customers and making money from onsite display ads.<\/p>\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/?s=google\" target=\"_blank\">Google <\/a>has since took this model on to become the\u00a0number one name in search, Yahoo services &#8211; which still include shopping, mail and news &#8211; still attracts a billion visitors every month.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NEEug_1XEcc\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"simplePullQuote right\"><p>&#8220;Our top priority continues to be enhancing security for our users,&#8221; Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the internet is a quickly evolving and unforgiving market and the board of the Yahoo has agreed to sell Yahoo\u2019s core internet operations and land holdings to <a class=\"meta-org\" title=\"More information about Verizon Communications Inc.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/topic\/company\/verizon-communications-inc?inline=nyt-org\">Verizon Communications<\/a> for $4.8 billion, sensing the Silicon Valley company\u00a0has reached the end of the line as an independent company.<\/p>\n<p>The recent data breach revelations, which date back to 2013, have seen the deal stall and instead of being completed in Q.1 of this year, it&#8217;s believed the takeover will now take placed sometime in Q.2.<\/p>\n<p>Since the cyber attacks of 2013 and 2104, the company has placed its attentions on restoring confidence in its search offering, which it still considers a key part of its business, but results published earlier this week showed a fall in search revenue of 6% in the final quarter of 2016, while revenue from its mobile, video, native and social advertising units grew more strongly.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the company reported a $162m profit in the final three months of last year &#8211; not bad for a business with its better days behind it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/conference-call\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/conference-call-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The proposed $4.8 billion sale of American search and tech giant Yahoo to telecoms firm Verizon has been put on hold following a series of high-profile data security breaches that\u00a0saw<\/p>\n<div class=\"more-link-wrapper\"><a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/high-profile-hacks-delay-yahoo-sale\/\">Read More<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">High profile hacks delay Yahoo sale<\/span><\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[13,17],"tags":[29,26,18],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.9 -
