{"id":3511,"date":"2017-03-10T11:00:17","date_gmt":"2017-03-10T11:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3511"},"modified":"2017-03-10T11:00:17","modified_gmt":"2017-03-10T11:00:17","slug":"what-is-the-internet-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/what-is-the-internet-of-things\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the internet of things?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The internet of\u00a0things (IoT) is the name given to all those devices that are connected and communicate with\u00a0us, each other, and compatible apps over the internet.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of the IoT has been around for decades, at least since 1989 when the first connected\u00a0toaster (!) was\u00a0mooted at that year&#8217;s Interop Internet networking show &#8211;\u00a0a year later, at the 1990 Interop,\u00a0a Sunbeam Deluxe Automatic Radiant Control Toaster was connected to the internet, and so the fledgling IoT was born.<\/p>\n<p>And now pretty much every electrical device you can think of is connected, from televisions, to printers, to fridges &#8211; and we all know the endgame is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/three-ways-google-will-kill-us-all\/\" target=\"_blank\">the machines will one day rise up and take over the world<\/a>, but that&#8217;s another story&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s the point of the internet of things?<\/h2>\n<p>It does seem that some devices are connected to the internet just for the\u00a0sake of it &#8211; I&#8217;d no more need a fridge to tell me that I&#8217;m out of milk, than I&#8217;d need something like the\u00a0Amazon Echo to tell me what the weather&#8217;s like, I can just look inside and outside, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But there are some tangible benefits to be had from connected devices, as\u00a0Caroline Gorski, the head of IoT at <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.catapult.org.uk\/\">Digital Catapult<\/a> told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">WIRED<\/a>, the future science, culture and technology news site:\u00a0&#8220;IoT offers us opportunity to be more efficient in how we do things, saving us time, money and often emissions in the process,&#8221; Evans said. It allows companies, governments and public authorities to re-think how they deliver services and produce goods.<\/p>\n<p>She added:\u00a0&#8220;The quality and scope of the data across the Internet of Things generates an opportunity for much more contextualised and responsive interactions with devices to create a potential for change,&#8221; continued Gorski. IoT &#8220;doesn&#8217;t stop at a screen&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"r\">And this infographic from the New Jersey Institute of Technology explains how the internet of things can save money on an industrial scale.
