{"id":3614,"date":"2017-04-27T11:14:34","date_gmt":"2017-04-27T10:14:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2017-04-27T11:49:36","modified_gmt":"2017-04-27T10:49:36","slug":"who-are-the-uks-main-trading-partners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/who-are-the-uks-main-trading-partners\/","title":{"rendered":"Who are the UK&#8217;s main trading partners?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since the 51.9% voted for the UK to leave the EU back in June last year, there&#8217;s been a lot of conjecture on what the split will mean for trade &#8211; many of those who voted <em>leave <\/em>are\u00a0sure the nation is in a stronger position now it can arrange its own trade deals with countries outside of the EU, such as India, New Zealand and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, \u00a0those in the <em>remain<\/em> camp find it difficult to see the logic in sorting expensive trade deals with countries halfway around the world when there&#8217;s so many willing customers right on our doorstep.<\/p>\n<p>And while there are reasonable arguments from both camps, it&#8217;s worth looking at who are currently the UK&#8217;s main trading partners&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Who are the UK&#8217;s main trade partners?<\/h2>\n<p>In 2016, trade with the EU made up almost half (48%) of all goods exported from the UK, while goods imported from the EU were worth more than imports from the rest of the world combined, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).<\/p>\n<p>This interactive infographic\u00a0shows how much the UK imports and exports to each country across the globe&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/visualisations\/dvc390\/worldmap\/index.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"800px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\">https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/nationalaccounts\/balanceofpayments\/bulletins\/uktrade\/january2016#trade-in-goods-geographical-analysishttp:\/\/visual.ons.gov.uk\/uk-trade-partners\/Germany remains the UK\u2019s top import partner with imports of \u00a34.8 billion, decreasing by \u00a30.1 billion when compared with December 2015. Anecdotal evidence suggests this decrease was due to a fall in the import of aircraft.There were record high imports from the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia. Imports from the Czech Republic increased by 9.2% to \u00a30.5 billion, from Romania by 3.5% to \u00a30.1 billion and from Slovakia by 46.9% to \u00a30.2 billion.<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tORMPinaPIE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The UK currently runs a trade deficit with the biggest economies of the European Union, which means it imports more than it exports. It has a trade surplus, whereby it exports more than it imports, with 108 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, Switerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the US.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the UK spends more on imports than it does on exports &#8211; in 2015,\u00a0the UK spent a total of \u00a3547,234 million on imports, and brought in \u00a3517,446 million through exports. Germany is the UK&#8217;s biggest EU trading partner, with imports totaling \u00a370, 363 million and exports \u00a348,501 million.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the EU, the US is the UK&#8217;s biggest trading partner, with import figures reaching \u00a359,258 million and exports \u00a396,425 million.<\/p>\n<p>This ONS infographic shows the UK&#8217;s top import partners&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/visualisations\/dvc390\/treemap\/imports.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"800px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;while this ONS infographic shows its biggest export partners.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/visualisations\/dvc390\/treemap\/exports.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"800px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>No one can say with any certainty what effect Brexit will have on UK imports and exports, but it&#8217;s interesting to know that, EU or no EU, the US is actually the UK&#8217;s biggest trade partner.
