Have you ever dumped anyone by text? If not, you might find yourself doing so sometime soon – from today you can dump your mobile phone provider and switch to a better deal by simply sending a text.<\/p>\n

What has changed?<\/h2>\n

Before now, switching mobile phone provider has been a real hassle, with lots of back-and-forth between you and your old supplier to get Porting Authorisation Code (PAC), and then more back-and-forth between you and you new provider to use that PAC code to set up the account.<\/p>\n

But, as of today, you can switch provider by text message, thanks to new rules that have been introduced by Ofcom, the telecoms regulator, designed to simplify the process and make it a lot easier to leave one provider and switch to another.<\/p>\n

Instead of having to speak to your mobile provider, the new ‘text-to-switch’ service means you can simply text them to receive a code that last for up to 30 days.<\/p>\n

It’s hoped the new scheme will put an end to customers finding themselves in the position whereby they’re paying contracts with both their old and new provider. Ofcom has also banned mobile providers from charging for notice periods running after the switch date, and estimates this will save consumers around \u00a310 million a year.<\/p>\n

Why do you need a PAC?<\/h3>\n

You need a PAC to switch provider only when you want to keep your existing number. A PAC enables you\u00a0to take your old number with\u00a0you when changing mobile service providers.<\/p>\n

How to switch mobile phone provider\u00a0 text message<\/h2>\n

If you want to switch mobile phone provider and keep your existing number, you can now do so by texting the word \u201cPAC\u201d to 65075. The switching service is free to use.<\/p>\n

Your PAC will then be sent back to you in a text message, along with any other important contract information, including early termination charges if you are are still in contract, or any remaining credit if you pay as you go. You can also get more contract information from your supplier by texting \u201cINFO\u201d to 85075.<\/p>\n

The PAC is valid for 30 days, and you simply pass it on to your new provider and the switch should be completed within one working day.<\/p>\n

If you have more than one number linked to your account, you can’t request your PAC by text. Instead, you should go to your provider’s website, where you code should still be provided instantly.<\/p>\n
