{"id":5866,"date":"2020-09-03T17:55:28","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T16:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5866"},"modified":"2021-06-15T10:49:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T09:49:59","slug":"would-you-use-a-life-expectancy-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/would-you-use-a-life-expectancy-app\/","title":{"rendered":"Would you use a life-expectancy app?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you could put a number on how many years you had left to live, would you want to know what it is?<\/p>\n<p>It sounds like science fiction, but it&#8217;s now become science fact thanks to an app developed by the boffins at the University of East Anglia. <a href=\"https:\/\/mylongevity.org\/\">MyLongevity.org<\/a> was launched today and uses big data from anonymised electronic health records to calculate life expectancy.<\/p>\n<p>Who wants to live forever, anyway?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is MyLongevity.org?<\/h2>\n<p>An app launched on Thursday, September 3, 2020 that uses big data from a range on anonymous health records to forecast life expectancy, as well as highlighting how many years you have left to live, and your risk of a heart attack or stroke within the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5868\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conferencecall.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/life-expectancy-counter-app-page-1024x505.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How was the life expectancy app developed?<\/h2>\n<p>Developed by researchers from the University of East Anglia, the Mylongevity app uses big data from anonymised electronic health records to calculate life expectancy \u2013 taking into account socio-demographic and health characteristics such as chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>While the app was designed before the onset of Covid-19, the research team are working to incorporate hypothetical life expectancy change scenarios into its forecast.<\/p>\n<p>They say the new app could help bring practical, financial and medical benefits \u2013 such as helping people plan for retirement. It can also help people understand how behaviours such as smoking affect longevity.<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher Prof Elena Kulinskaya, from UEA\u2019s School of Computing Sciences, said: \u201cPeople are interested in their life expectancy, but it is not just out of morbid curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife expectancy is a big consideration in any long-term planning and it is especially important to people planning their financial goals and retirement strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can also help people improve their life expectancy by making healthy lifestyle changes,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The calculations are based on UK life expectancy figures published by the Office for National Statistics, and refined using UEA research on cardiovascular disease and the benefits of statin use.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Kulinskaya said: \u201cWe have identified and quantified the key factors affecting mortality and longevity, such as lifestyle choices, medical conditions and medical interventions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe software we have developed is based on our research using electronic health records. In our recent analysis of life expectancy, we followed a cohort of 110,000 healthy people who hit 60 between 1990 and 2000 for the next 25 years, updating their health status every six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of our analysis are translated into life expectancies for 648 different risk profiles based on age, sex and postcode. The list of risk factors we used include hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, BMI, the risk of a cardiac event within 10 years, smoking status and statin use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research included people aged 60 and older, resident in England and Wales. For younger people, we provide life expectancy assuming that they survive to age 60 retaining all their current demographic and health characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research provides a calculation of life expectancy at a very fine scale. It is still an average individual lifespans will vary either side of that, but it may give people some useful food for thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately the Covid-19 pandemic may result in a decreased life expectancy for some. We are confident that the key application of our tool &#8211; helping to show the relative effects of such things as smoking &#8211; is largely unaffected, but we plan to fine tune it to explore life expectancy changes caused by the pandemic,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The app could prove useful for GPs to help people make lifestyle changes, as well as for actuaries and demographers.<\/p>\n<p>The research was based on the results of a research programme on \u2018Big Health and Actuarial Data for understanding Longevity and Morbidity Risks\u2019 funded by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and commissioned through its Actuarial Research Centre (ARC). The development of the Mylongevity App was funded by UEA.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the average life expectancy in the UK<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, the average life expectancy in the UK is 81.16 years &#8211; but this can vary dramatically according to a range of health and socioeconomic factors.
