1. Security Protocol<\/h3>\n

When configuring the router, you can usually choose from various security protocols.\u00a0You should choose either WPA2 or WPA.\u00a0The WEP protocol, on the other hand, has low security standards, which is why you should refrain from using it.<\/p>\n

2. Network Name and Password<\/h3>\n

The name of the home network is automatically generated\u00a0by the provider at the beginning via an SSID (\u00a0Service Set Identifier ).\u00a0<\/em>You should change from this standard name to a different designation.\u00a0The same applies to the\u00a0WLAN\u00a0password.\u00a0This should be of sufficient length (+15 characters) and a combination of lower and upper case letters, numbers and characters.\u00a0Regularly changing this password also ensures a particularly high level of WLAN security.<\/p>\n

3. Guest network<\/h3>\n

Many routers have the option of setting up a network for guests in addition to the normal home network.\u00a0The connection runs via a separate password.\u00a0By separating the networks, guests have more difficult access to other devices in the home network, so your devices and data are better protected from outside influences.\u00a0If you choose this option, you should also ensure that you choose a secure password and change it regularly.<\/p>\n

4. Firewalls<\/h3>\n

Just like computers, routers have a firewall, which is the first line of defense against attacks with malware, Trojans and the like.\u00a0This (ideally) recognizes suspicious access from outside and blocks it.\u00a0The firewall is usually installed automatically when a router is installed – but in any case it is worth checking the current status and switching on the firewall if it is not active.<\/p>\n

5. Updates<\/h3>\n

Last but not least: As with all devices that are connected to the Internet, you should also update routers regularly.\u00a0Providers are constantly improving their WLAN security and closing loopholes.\u00a0In order to benefit from this support, new updates should always be installed directly or automatic updates should be activated.<\/p>\n
