Tech tops the UK’s top 20 coolest brands

The UK’s top 20 coolest brands may not be something that’s necessarily on your radar – why would an arbitrary measure of something the vast majority of consumers buy into, or would like to buy into, ever be on anyone’s radar?

If you’re into tech though, this year’s list makes for interesting reading – not only does a tech brand top the list, other tech brands are clearly on the up.

Tech is top

For the fourth year running tech – more specifically, Apple – has top the list of the 20 coolest brands in the UK.

Other notable tech names that feature in the top 10 are Netflix (5), Instagram (7) and YouTube (9).

Tech also features heavily in the rest of the top 20, with Spotify (11),  Google (12),  Sonos (14) and Bang & Olufson (16) all making the cut.

Top 20 Coolest Brands

The Top 20 Coolest Brands is compiled by CoolBrands and takes the opinions of 2,500 UK consumers and an independent panel of judges on some 1,450 brands.

And here’s how the top 20 coolest brands lined up, alongside their positions from last year:

1. Apple (1)

2. Ray-Ban (12)

3. Glastonbury (4)

4. Nike (3)

5. Netflix (10)

6. Alexander McQueen (13)

7. Instagram (14)

New tech to hit the top 20

What’s most encouraging from a tech perspective, is not only how a brand like Apple can consolidate its position at the top, or even how Netflix and Instagram are on the up, it’s how relatively new tech names like Spotify and Sonos have crashed into the top 20, ahead of huge lifestyle brands like Adidas and Virgin Atlantic.

Chairman of the CoolBrands Council (no, really), Stephen Cheliotis, said: “Attaining Top 20 CoolBrands status takes time and isn’t the result of a one year fad or flash in the pan.

“Young brands however, like Netflix and Instagram, are showing clear momentum. They are moving up the Top 20 at a decent pace and posing a threat to established sector peers, suggesting they’ll challenge the leading brand overall.”

It can’t be long before ConferenceCall.co.uk is troubling the top spots…
